Our Vision for the Trauma Healing Lodge

The Trauma Healing Lodge is a place for the North, by the North. It will support Indigenous northerns as they heal from intergenerational trauma caused by residential schools, forced displacement, and other colonial harms.

Today, people must travel far from home and culture to access trauma care, leaving behind their families, communities, and cultural supports. The Lodge will change that. Located in the NWT, it will be a safe, welcoming space for healing close to home, where land, culture and language are part of the healing journey.

Trauma healing and addictions treatment are not the same but they are connected. The Lodge will help people walk a journey of healing the trauma that can lead to substance abuse. It will use holistic, culturally grounded approaches. Here, people will find support as they navigate trauma and grief, reconnect with their spiritual and cultural identities, and move toward healing that strengthens not only individuals, but families and communities across the North.

Holistic Approach to Healing

The Lodge will bring together Indigenous and Western knowledge and healing methods.

At the Lodge, people will find support and healing through trauma-informed counselling—both one-on-one and in groups—delivered in a way that feels safe, respectful, and connected to culture. Healing will focus on the whole person, mind, body, spirit, and emotion, through activities like expressive arts, movement, time on the land, and opportunities to reflect and share.

Led by Indigenous counsellors, the Lodge will create a space built on understanding, trust and connection. At its core, the Lodge will support people as they reconnect with their identity, their culture and their community.

The Lodge will be located in nature and close to water. This location is part of the healing journey—offering a place to slow down, reconnect, and find balance.

At its heart, healing is a journey of reconnection. Through culture, language, and community, people are supported to rediscover who they are, where they come from, and how to move forward with strength and purpose.
